Why you should consider applying to become an SBHA Tenant Board Member.

I joined Scottish Borders Tenants Organisation (SBTO) shortly after being allocated my home and subsequently acted as Vice Chair for three years and Chair for two years.  I found I was ready to take on more responsibility and was interested in joining the Customer Board as a Tenant representative.  I had many years experience as a retail manager with a national charity and felt that  I could use some of my knowledge and back ground to contribute to the work of the Customer Board.  The Customer Board is a sub board of the Board of Management and deals with the practical aspects of running SBHA, making decisions on the purchase of the best and most cost effective new windows and doors, for example and ratifying policies in the best interests of Tenants.

After two years I decided to stand as a Tenant representative for the Board of Management.  I was lucky enough to be elected and was welcomed by all the other members of the board at the first meeting.  I was given a comprehensive induction and had on going training in all aspects of the Board’s work.  I was especially pleased to attend the financial training as I had limited knowledge in that area.

I feel I had good input into the work of the Board and coming in as a Tenant I may have had a different slant on some of the things discussed.  I am unfortunately now standing down after three years, for personal reasons.  I found my time on the Board to be challenging, invigorating and at times fun.
