Our Commitment to accessibility
SBHA is committed to ensuring that our website, sbha.org.uk, is accessible to anyone and everyone who needs to use it. Our commitment to accessibility includes:
- Embracing inclusive design principles both online and offline
- Listening to feedback from both users and non-users of our website so we can continue to improve the accessibility of our website and associated services.
- Working with providers who are equally passionate about accessibility.
We aim to provide content that is usable by everyone, regardless of technology, disability or device, and to meet recognised web accessibility standards.
- AccessibilityStandards and Scope
We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA which is the standard widely adopted in the UK and Europe.
Our accessibility efforts apply to the website as a whole, including pages, documents, images, navigation, forms and multimedia. There are some areas where this is still a work in progress. These are noted in the “Limitations and alternatives” section below.
- When using or website you should be able to:
- Navigate most of the website using a keyboard.
- Move around the website and understand the content using speech recognition software.
- Alter the appearance of the website to a primarily monochrome high contrast version of the website using the “monochrome on/monochrome off” button in the header.
- Zoom in to at least 300% without spilling text over the edge of the screen.

- What we are doing to support accessibility
We have built our website with accessibility at the forefront. This means we designed it using inclusive practices and with input from members of the Scottish Borders Tenants Organisation.
We have reviewed our website content, including PDFs, and working to fix anything that could make it harder to use. We have:
- Designed the website structure so it is compatible with screen readers and keyboard navigation.
- Ensured text contrast meets minimum recommended levels for legibility.
- Provided an alternative high contrast version of the website in response to concerns raised by users.
- Included a skip to content link to remove obstacles for users of assistive devices.
- Provided meaningful link and button labels, and ensured headings are used in a logical hierarchy.
- Added alternative (“alt”) text for images where appropriate.
- Ensured forms are labelled properly and error messages are clear and accessible.
- Employed responsive design so the site works across various device types and screen sizes.
- Carried out accessibility testing using automated tools and manual reviews to identify and address issues.
- Limitations and alternatives
Despite our efforts, there may be some parts of the website that are not fully accessible at this time. These may include:
- Older PDF documents that do not fully meet accessibility standards. [I know you did a lot of work on PDFs so this might not be relevant]
- Some third‑party content or embedded tools over which SBHA has limited control.
- Videos content that does not include accurate captions
- Compliance Status
This website is designed to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We continuously test and refine content against these standards to achieve maximum accessibility for our users.
This website has been audited for accessibility using automated tools and manual checking. Checks have been performed on a representative sample of pages. These pages achieved a WCAG 2.2 AA standard.
We are always working to improve accessibility and make our website easier for everyone to use.
