Getting Involved

Information about ways to participate in decision making with SBHA

Ralph

All registered social landlords (RSLs) and local authorities in Scotland must have a tenant participation strategy which will enable 'continuous improvement in landlords' performance in supporting and enabling tenants to participate'.

At SBHA, Tenants are involved at every level of our organisation; from our Board supporting our strategic direction, through to local groups looking at day-to-day service delivery.

Together, we can ensure we're delivering the best service for you and your community. We have a range of opportunities for you to give your feedback and help shape our services.

Tracey Glover

“Although I’d never have thought I’d have the time, confidence or interest to be part of a Tenants organisation, joining SBTO has been a productive, sociable and supportive experience with like-minded Tenants. I joined the Board and would encourage all Tenants to consider doing so too so that Tenants’ voices continue to be heard.”

Tracey Glover, SBHA Tenant and Board member

Marlen at TPAS

“As a Tenant I love getting involved and never though I would be confident sitting on a Board. But bit by bit my confidence has grown and I feel that I’m being listened to and that we’re achieving something great for the community.”

Marlen Jones, Honorary Member of SBTO

Ways to get involved

Meet the SBTO team

Gordon

Chair - Gordon Saunders

"I have been a Tenant of SBHA for 18 years and been involved with SBTO for around 10 years. During this time I have been involved with most aspects of SBTO. This includes policy making where we have a direct input in the policy making process. Scrutiny projects to give input into how some services work and could be tweaked to benefit both SBHA and more importantly the Tenants. I also had a spell on the Board of Management which was a great experience and opened my eyes to the complex workings of SBHA. I am involved in social housing on a national level as Treasurer of Tenants Together Scotland and as a board member of Tenants Information Service. At the moment I have the privilege of being the current Chair of SBTO supported by a great group of people. We all have one thing in common - the passion to stand up for Tenants and support SBHA in making things better for Tenants."

Dominic Brookes

Vice-Chair - Dominic Brookes

"I've been a member of SBTO for over 7 years & currently Joint Vice-Chair. I joined SBTO as I am passionate about Social Housing, it's importance in society and wanted to meet likeminded people.

"What I enjoy about being a member of SBTO is the fact we as a Team get to be involved with SBHA in decisions being made that can make a positive impact on us as Tenants and the service provided by SBHA."

Vice-Chair - Ralph Nichol

"After having taken part in a Scrutiny project run by SBTO I realised that Tenants could influence how SBHA works and the service it provides for Tenants.

"Having seen the recommendations from the Scrutiny implemented I decided that I would like to continue making a difference and the best way to do that was joining SBTO where by combining knowledge with enthusiasm Tenants can ensure that "For Tenants by Tenants" continues to be true.

"The friendliness with a willingness to share knowledge and experience has made SBTO a great experience for me."

Treasurer - Margaret Graham

"I joined SBTO after taking part in a scrutiny project on the Planned Maintenance Programme. I enjoy finding out how SBHA works, getting involved in policy reviews, road shows, getting to work with other SBHA staff and management, SBTO members on scrutiny and other projects. We also get to go to see how other housing providers in other areas manage and relate to their tenant organisations.

"I am now on the committee as treasurer for the second year. I love all the challenges and insight that being part of the team throws up, and I do what I can when I can, as we all do.  We are listened to, and our opinions are taken on board."

Margaret Graham

Secretary - Gregory Theocharis

"I've been a member of SBTO for more than two years now.

"I joined the Scottish Border Tenants Organisation (SBTO) to connect with other community members and areas within the Borders, and to advocate for Tenants’ views regarding SBHA’s policies and procedures, ensuring they receive the best possible housing service from their landlord."

"I am also the Chair of recently-formed residents group 'Also My Stonefield'. This initiative is set to bring neighbours together to ensure Stonefield and Liddesdale remains a great place to live in. This newly formed group is being driven by locals and offers an opportunity for residents to come together, share ideas, and work on projects that matter most to them."

Frequently asked questions about being part of SBTO

Scrutiny panel

What is Scrutiny?

Tenant Scrutiny Panel Composition:

  • The aim of the Customer Audit Teams (CAT) is to review and scrutinise Scottish Borders Housing Association’s (SBHA) service standards provided to Tenants in an independent way with the intention of identifying what works well and what could be improved, to ensure all Tenants receive the best possible services, standards and value-for-money.
  • The CAT is made up of Tenants from across the Scottish Borders and Members of the Scottish Borders Tenants Organisation (SBTO).
  • They carry out an annual project and a report is produced with findings and recommendations which are considered by SBHA’s Customer Board.
  • The Customer Board is responsible for monitoring the agreed actions until they are complete, and SBTO will be kept informed regularly and until all actions are completed by SBHA.
