SBHA’s Garages to Homes project named finalist in the Herald Property Awards

We’re delighted to share that Scottish Borders Housing Association’s pioneering Garages to Homes project has been named as a finalist in the Herald Property Awards 2026, in the Innovation in Sustainable Construction and Design category.

Delivered in partnership with HUSK, the project has transformed redundant and underused garage sites in Jedburgh and Hawick into 13 high-quality, accessible and energy-efficient homes for social rent. It is Scotland’s first delivered HUSK Garages to Homes development, showing how unloved spaces can be reimagined to help meet local housing need, reduce waste and regenerate neighbourhoods.

The homes include fully level access, adapted shower rooms, air source heat pumps, solar panels, fire suppression systems and A-rated EPCs, helping to create warm, comfortable and affordable homes in places where people already live and want to stay.

The shortlisting recognises the creativity, partnership working and practical impact behind the project, which has turned small, constrained and underused sites into much-needed homes while improving the look and feel of local neighbourhoods.

Thank you to all the tenants, residents, partners and funders who helped make Garages to Homes possible, including HUSK, South of Scotland Enterprise and everyone who shared feedback during consultation.

We’re proud to see this innovative Scottish Borders project recognised nationally and look forward to the awards next month.
