Garages to Homes – Hawick
Why are we planning to do this Garages to Homes project?
Our proposal covers several sites across the Borders, and we are consulting on potential options in the early phases of the project. The aim of the project is to provide homes which:
Meet the challenge of housing for older people
- 25% of our population is over the age of 65.
- The Local Housing Strategy identified a serious under supply of smaller homes suitable for older people.
- Homes need to be accessible, affordable, efficient to heat and cool, have outside space and be close to care and support, all within people’s existing community.
Address the needs of people living with disabilities
-
- There are 2,000 wheelchair users in the Borders.
- 2,000-2,500 people are living with substantial difficulties moving around their home.
- There are only 164 existing accessible homes in the Borders.
