Catching up with our apprentices

Back in 2016, we met Kyle Brunton, who was just starting out on his career in joinery. Kyle is now in the final year of his apprenticeship.

Talking about his decision to take up the apprenticeship, Kyle said: “I always wanted to do something in construction, ever since I was really young. I took classes in construction and woodwork at school, and just decided it was what I wanted to do. I got my National Progression Award in joinery at College, and then took up a placement in Hawick. I was due to go on with it, but then I saw the advert for Modern Apprenticeships on SBHA’s Facebook page.”

We asked – what has been the thing you’ve most enjoyed about your apprenticeship?
“I’ve enjoyed working with a lot of different people as I’ve learned to do so many things.”

“It’s about more than just the practical skills. being in and out of people’s homes every day, you learn how to talk to people and explain to them what you’re doing. I enjoy the variety – I work on bathrooms, kitchens, doors and windows. Everything, really. An apprenticeship sets you up for life.

Asked what he’s most proud of achieving over the past few years, he said: “I am proud of the range of skills I’ve learned.”

What do you want to do when you finish your apprentice ship? “I’m looking forward to becoming a full-time joiner.”
